Screencap Analysis

This screencap is an eye level shot with a wide rectangle aspect ratio. Here, we see two individuals at the center of the image, a man and a woman. The man appears to have blood on his hands and lacerations on the side of his torso, as if he was in a brawl. He has dark hair and prominent muscles. He is shirtless, and the screencap cuts off at his waist. The viewer can see some white material that appear to be his pants. He has handcuffs around his wrist, and one of his bloody hands on the face of the woman. The handcuffs insinuate that he is in some type of legal trouble.

It appears that the woman in the photo is being consoled by the man. This woman is pale, and her hair is in a long braid down her back. The viewer has a limited view of her face due to the lighting and the shirtless man in the image. Her hand is in the approximate center of the image, gently touching the man’s chest.  Surrounding the man and woman are three law enforcement officers. Due to a shadow, it is difficult to see their facial expressions clearly, but it is evident that their mouths are open, as if they are surprised. On the right side of the frame, there is one officer with his weapon drawn, pointing towards the man of interest. There are another two on the left side of the frame. All of the officers are wearing brown uniform shirts, with visible pins above the shirt pockets. They are all wearing hats with some type of emblem. The leftmost officer seems to have a rope on his shoulder in addition to holding a handgun. There is a fourth officer who did not make it into the frame, with only his shoulder present. All individuals in this photo appear to be of Asian decent.

This screencap shows the ending of the film. The eye level shot makes the viewer feel more connected with the scene. After the dinner party and spending the night with a prostitute, Chao-an returns home to find his family murdered and Chiao Mei missing. Shortly after, Chao-an storms the home of the ice factory owner, Hsiao Mi. He then subsequently fights and kills Hsiao Mi and his men. In a state of shock of what had just occurred, Chao-an sees Mei, who was freed by one of the boss’s slaves. As the police handcuff and corner in on Chao-an, he and Mei have one final moment together before Chao-an is escorted off by law enforcement officers. This is sentimental moment for both Chao-an and Mei, as they have the realization they may never see each other again, in addition to losing all of their loved ones. They both have a look of grief on their faces. It seems as if Chao-an takes responsibility for the events that have unfolded.

  1. Overall, your analysis is very solid. There were many detailed descriptions of everything in the shot and the context you brought in from the rest of the film was interesting. Something I think would make this post even better is if you incorporated ideas of why you think that the director chose to make the shot the way it was. For example, why include the police in the shot, why that was the camera angle and not others, et cetera.

  2. Great job describing the scene in the first paragraph. You mentioned in the first paragraph that there is a very limited view of the characters face, I wonder if you could expand upon the reason for this in either the first or second paragraph. I though you did a great job in the second paragraph establishing the plot and really jogging the memory the events that unfold up until this particular shot. Awesome job!

    1. Hi Matt, thanks for your comment. I appreciate your input. I think there is limited view of the characters faces because Chao-an seems to be consoling Mei. I will keep this in mind for next time!

  3. A great scene to pick, documented well. You go into the detail of what is going on in the picture very well, as there is tons of it. I like the most how you insinuate after declaring what you say. I would like to see in the future some description and insinuations on the background or surrounding.

    1. Hi Paul, thanks for posting a comment. I definitely should have commented on the background, I just forgot, as I was too wrapped up in the individuals that were present in the shot. The clear blue sky adds light and helps us view Chao-an and Mei more clearly.
